Orhei is named after Old Orhei, a former medieval city. Located about 16 km downstream from the modern city of Raut River, Orhei was destroyed by the Crimean Tatars from the 14th century to the 16th century. The city was the center of the Turkish Army in Northern Betharabia (Moldova) until the city was taken over by the Russian Empire in 1812.Orhei left Russia in 1918 and joined Romania. But in 1945, the USSR regained Orhei again. After the dissolution of the Soviets, the city became a part of the Republic of Moldova.
